Abstract
The aging process causes a decline in sensory,neuromuscular, and musculoskeletal functions, which affects dynamic balance in older adults. Changes in body composition as reflected by Body Mass Index (BMI) and low levels of physical activity are known to play a role in balance and functional mobility. However, studies on the relationship between BMI and dynamic balance in elderly people with low physical activity are still limited. This study aims to determine the relationship between Body Mass Index and dynamic balance in elderly people with low physical activity.Observational quantitative research with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 98 elderly people aged 60–74 years with low physical activity selected using purposive sampling techniques. Physical activity was measured using the PASE-INA questionnaire. BMI was measured based on weight and height, while dynamic balance was assessed using the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) and Functional Gait Assessment (FGA). Data analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test for the relationship between BMI and TUG and Fisher's Exact test for the relationship between BMI and FGA.There was a significant relationship between BMI and TUG (p<0.05) and between BMI and FGA (p<0.05). Body Mass Index is significantly related to dynamic balance in elderly individuals with low physical activity. However, dynamic balance is multifactorial and can be influenced by various factors other than BMI.
