Abstract

Hypertension also known as high blood pressure, is one of the most common public health problems and contributes significantly to morbidity and mortality rates globally. Elderly are among the most at-risk populations due to the decline in physiological function that is part of the aging process. These degenerative changes impact organ function and immune system resilience, thereby increasing susceptibility to hypertension and its complications. One important factor contributing to the occurrence of hypertension complications in the elderly is the low level of knowledge regarding hypertension management and efforts to prevent complications. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the level of knowledge about hypertension and the behavior of preventing hypertension complications in the elderly at the Kartasura Community Health Center. This study uses a quantitative design with a correlational method through a cross-sectional approach. The study population was elderly people with a diagnosis of hypertension without complication at the Kartasura Community Health Center, with a sample size of 85 respondents selected using accidental sampling based on criteria. Data collection was conducted using a structured questionnaire that included the Hypertension Knowledge Level Scale (HK-LS) and a questionnaire on complication prevention behavior, which was then analyzed using Spearman's rank correlation test. The results showed that most respondents had a good level of knowledge (54.1%) and good prevention behavior (49.4%). A p-value of 0.000 and a correlation coefficient (rho) of 0.626 indicate a strong and statistically significant positive relationship between hypertension knowledge level and complication prevention behavior. This study can be concluded that there is a significant and strong relationship between hypertension knowledge level and hypertension complication prevention behavior among the elderly at Puskesmas Kartasura. Increased knowledge can improve preventive behaviors to reduce the risk of complications from hypertension.
