Abstract

This study was motivated by the low English speaking ability of students, which is influenced by psychological factors such as lack of self-confidence. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in developing students’ self-confidence and speaking skills in English Club activities. This study employed a Mixed-Method with an Explanatory Sequential design. The sample consisted of 30 English Club students at junior high schools in Surakarta. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test, questionnaires, and in-depth interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, while qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results showed an increase in mean score from 73.83 to 86.13 and a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a significant difference between pre-test and post-test. Qualitative findings also revealed improvements in students’ self-confidence and speaking skills after the implementation of PBL. Therefore, Project-Based Learning is effective in enhancing students’ self-confidence and speaking skills in English Club activities.
