Abstract

Language is used as a tool that can connect people so that they can build interaction. The presence of language in life is seen as a space so that humans can express their idea, thoughts, and feelings or emotions. However, in the process of delivering ideas through speech, humans may make mistakes, called speech errors. In this digital era, the existence of many platforms can gather people around the world. YouTube has become one of powerful spaces where people interact in real time through live streaming. VTubers or Virtual YouTubers is the rising phenomenon on the internet. Among VTubers, Shu Yamino, a native English-speaking member of Luxiem, has been waited for his debut. His debut live-stream video, titled “Debut Stream”, has reached over 544,770 views, which will be analyzed in this research. According to Clark and Clark (1977), speech errors act as the result of speech production process that got distracted unintentionally. The existence of speech errors indicates that speech productions are complex processes that can be happened to anyone in any situation. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on speech errors which occurred by the speaker in digital live-streaming setting. It has not been recognized yet in previous research. This research aims to identify and classify the types of speech errors produced by Shu Yamino in his debut live-stream video and analyze the factors that contribute to the occurrence of these errors. By using a qualitative research design with a content analysis approach, the researcher collected the data through documentation by observing the video, listening carefully to the entire stream, identifying speech errors, and transcribing the relevant utterances. The findings show that Shu Yamino made 105 speech errors in total, resulting the presence of seven out of nine types of speech error, without the presence of slip of tongue and interjection. Three contributing factors of speech errors are also identified in this study, namely cognitive factors, psychological factors, and social factors. This study concludes that the speech errors produced by Shu Yamino are mostly filled pauses and caused by nervousness.
