Abstract
Polymer-based natural fiber composites are increasingly developed as environmentally friendly alternative materials due to their tunable mechanical properties. However, differences in chemical characteristics between the polymer matrix and reinforcing fibers often lead to weak interfacial bonding. Composites based on polypropylene and natural fibers have the potential to be eco-friendly materials whose mechanical performance can be improved through the addition of a coupling agent. This study aims to investigate the effect of adding Maleic Anhydride Polypropylene (MAPP) on the mechanical properties of the composite. Three compositions were used: without MAPP, with 1% MAPP, and with 4% MAPP. Tensile testing showed that adding 1% MAPP resulted in a good balance between strength and flexibility, with an average tensile strength of 11.249 MPa, elongation of 92.913%, and elastic modulus of 12.107 MPa. The composition with 4% MAPP showed the highest elastic modulus at 21.933 MPa, but its tensile strength and elongation decreased to 9.729 MPa and 44.357%, respectively. The composition without MAPP exhibited the highest elongation (103.850%) but lower tensile strength and modulus, at 10.428 MPa and 10.041 MPa, respectively. In the Izod impact test, the composition without MAPP showed the highest toughness with an average impact energy of 0.722 Joules and impact strength of 22.980 kJ/m². Conversely, the addition of MAPP reduced the toughness of the composite. These results indicate that MAPP is effective in improving the stiffness and tensile strength of the composite, but reduces its impact resistance.
