Abstract

Changes in political parties’ vote shares are a recurring phenomenon in every election and reflect the dynamics of voter preferences across regions. This study aims to analyze changes in the territorial bases of support for the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Golkar Party, and Gerindra Party in the 2019 and 2024 General Elections in Klaten Regency. The study employs an electoral geography approach to describe the spatial patterns of vote distribution and the accompanying social and physical regional contexts. This research adopts a qualitative approach supported by quantitative and qualitative data. The analytical methods used include spatial descriptive analysis, the Geographic Association Coefficient (GAC), and Location Quotient (LQ). The unit of analysis in this study is the sub-district (kecamatan) in Klaten Regency. The results show that in the 2024 election, Electoral District (Dapil) 2 exhibited a relatively stronger level of spatial clustering of vote shares for all three political parties compared to other districts. Nevertheless, overall vote distribution for PDI-P, Golkar, and Gerindra remains relatively dispersed across Klaten Regency. At the sub-district level based on LQ analysis, PDI-P experienced an increase in the number of support-base areas from 12 sub-districts in 2019 to 14 sub-districts in 2024. In contrast, Golkar showed a decline in the number of support-base areas, while Gerindra largely maintained a consistent number of base areas in both elections. Social characteristics such as age composition, educational level, and occupational structure of voters, along with the physical characteristics of the region, demonstrate varying patterns of vote distribution across parties and sub-districts in Klaten Regency.
