Abstract

Slang is a form of language variation commonly used in informal communication and popular media, including movies. It reflects linguistic creativity, social relationships, and contextual meaning. This study aims to analyze English slang in the Thunderbolts (2025) movie focusing on word formation processes, meanings, and contexts of use. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with data taken from movie dialogues containing slang expressions. The data were analyzed using Yule’s theory of word formation, Leech’s theory of meaning, and Halliday and Hasan’s theory of situational context. The findings show that seven types of word formation were identified, with compounding as the most dominant process. The slang expressions convey various meanings, including affective, connotative, social, conceptual, and contextual meanings. In addition, the use of slang is influenced by situational context, social relationships between characters, and informal spoken communication. This study contributes to linguistic research by providing insight into slang usage in movies.
