Abstract

Eggs are a source of animal protein with high nutritional value, but their quality can decline if they are not sorted properly before consumption or distribution. Conventional sorting methods that are still widely used, such as manual light transmission and float tests, are subjective, time-consuming, and prone to human error, making them ineffective for small-scale farms. This study developed an egg quality detection tool with an automatic sorting feature as a more objective and efficient solution. The system works based on the principle of light transmission through eggs, where the intensity of light received by the sensor is converted into an Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) value, which is used as the basis for determining egg quality through a calibration process and comparison with a certain threshold value. Based on the classification results, the eggs are automatically directed to the appropriate sorting lane, while the entire sorting and egg counting process can be monitored through a real-time monitoring system. Test results show that the device is able to operate consistently and effectively in replacing the manual sorting process with a success rate of 93.4%, thereby increasing work efficiency and reducing the potential for errors in determining egg quality. Thus, this device has the potential to be a practical and applicable solution in supporting more efficient and modern egg quality management, especially in small-scale farms.
