Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a major health problem among older adults and is strongly associated with lifestyle factors. Low physical activity, unhealthy dietary habits, poor sleep quality, and smoking behavior increase the risk of hypertension in the elderly. Objective: To determine the relationship between physical activity, dietary habits, sleep patterns, and smoking behavior with hypertension among elderly individuals at Grogol Health Center, Sukoharjo. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 382 elderly participants selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through lifestyle questionnaires and blood pressure measurements. Spearman’s rho was used to analyze the relationship between variables. Result: Physical activity showed a weak negative correlation with the incidence of hypertension (r = –0.167), dietary patterns also demonstrated a weak negative correlation (r = –0.144), and resting habits had a weak negative correlation (r = –0.123). In addition, smoking habits showed a very weak negative correlation with the incidence of hypertension (r = –0.103). Conclusion: Lifestyle factors are significantly related to hypertension among the elderly. Strengthening health education and promoting healthier lifestyle behaviors are essential to reduce hypertension risk.
