Abstract
Background: Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF), which is spread through the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, is still a health problem for Indonesian citizens. Vector control strategies commonly rely on chemical larvicides, such as temephos, which may lead to resistance and adverse environmental effects. Therefore, the development of effective and environmentally friendly plant-based larvicides, particularly targeting the larval stage, is necessary. Objective: analyze the effectiveness of Plantago major leaf infusion on the mortality of Aedes aegypti larvae, to evaluate the effect of different infusion concentrations on larval mortality, and to compare its effectiveness with 1% temephos. Methods: This was an experimental laboratory study using a post-test only controlled group design. The samples were third- and fourth-instar Aedes aegypti larvae. The main experiment included six groups: a negative control, a positive control, and four treatment groups with infusion concentrations of 12.5%, 25%, 50%, and 75%, each conducted in four replications. Larval mortality was observed at 6, 12, 18, and 24 hours. The data was examined using the Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by the Dunn test. Results: The findings revealed that increasing concentrations of Plantago major leaf infusion were associated with increased larval mortality. The 75% concentration demonstrated the highest effectiveness, resulting in 100% larval mortality within 24 hours. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences among treatment groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: Plantago major leaf infusion is effective as a plant-based larvicide against Aedes aegypti larvae. Keywords: Plantago major, leaf infusion, Aedes aegypti, larval mortality.
