Abstract

Typhoid fever is a systemic infectious disease that commonly affects children and remains a major cause of hospitalization. Hematological changes, including leukocyte count and absolute lymphocyte count, are frequently observed in typhoid fever and are presumed to be associated with the clinical course of the disease, including length of hospital stay. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between leukocyte count and absolute lymphocyte count with length of hospital stay in pediatric patients with typhoid fever. This was an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design using secondary data from medical records of pediatric patients with typhoid fever aged under 18 years who were hospitalized at PKU Muhammadiyah Sampangan Hospital, Surakarta, from January to December 2024. Consecutive non-probability sampling was applied, yielding 48 study subjects. The variables analyzed were leukocyte count, absolute lymphocyte count at admission, and length of hospital stay. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s correlation test. The median leukocyte count was 5.79 ×10³/µL, the median absolute lymphocyte count was 1.509 ×10³/µL, and the median length of hospital stay was 2 days. The analysis revealed no significant correlation between leukocyte count and length of hospital stay (p = 0.338; r = –0.141) nor between absolute lymphocyte count and length of hospital stay (p = 0.119; r = –0.228). Conclusion: There is no significant correlation between leukocyte count or absolute lymphocyte count and length of hospital stay in pediatric patients with typhoid fever.
