Abstract
Background: Knee osteoarthritis represents a degenerative joint disease commonly associated with pain and functional limitations, leading to reduced quality of life. Along with the advancement of digital health technology, telerehabilitation has emerged as an alternative approach to deliver rehabilitation services remotely. Objective: This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of telerehabilitation in reducing pain and improving functional activity in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Methods: This research employed a literature review using a descriptive qualitative approach. Article searches were conducted through PubMed, Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro), and Google Scholar, covering publications from 2015 to 2025. Inclusion criteria consisted of randomized controlled trial designs, telerehabilitation as the primary intervention, and outcomes related to pain and functional activity. Out of 352 identified articles, 7 studies met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. Results: The findings indicate that telerehabilitation programs incorporating structured exercise delivered through video-based media, either synchronously via video conferencing or asynchronously through recorded exercise videos, combined with physiotherapist supervision, were effective in reducing pain and improving functional outcomes, with results comparable to conventional face-to-face rehabilitation. In contrast, telerehabilitation interventions relying solely on education or audio-based communication without structured exercise demonstrated limited effectiveness. Conclusion: In conclusion, telerehabilitation can be considered an effective alternative rehabilitation strategy for patients with knee osteoarthritis when implemented with comprehensive exercise components and adequate professional supervision.
