Abstract
Emergency care services are a crucial component of the healthcare system, playing a direct role in saving patients’ lives and preventing complications or disabilities. One of the key indicators of service quality in the Emergency Department (ED) is nurses’ response time, which according to national standards should not exceed five minutes after the patient’s arrival. However, in daily practice, achieving this standard often faces various challenges. Several individual factors of nurses, such as age, gender, education level, work experience, training, and workload, are thought to influence their response speed. This study aimed to determine the relationship between nurses’ characteristics and response time in the Emergency Department of PKU Muhammadiyah Sampangan Hospital, a type D hospital with limited facilities and resources. This study employed a quantitative correlational design with an observational approach. All emergency department nurses (n = 13) were included as samples using the total sampling technique, consisting of 6 male nurses and 7 female nurses. Data on nurse characteristics, including gender, age, education, and years of service, were collected using demographic questionnaires and a nurse workload instrument (Nursalam, 2017), while response time data were obtained through direct observation using a stopwatch. Data were analyzed using the Spearman correlation test with a 0.05 significance level. The results showed a significant relationship between gender (p = 0.001; r = 0.866), education (p = 0.013; r = -0.668), and years of service (p = 0,033; r = -0,592) with nurses’ response time. Conversely, age (p = 0.146; r = -0.426) and workload measured using the Nurse Workload Questionnaire (Nursalam, 2017) ) (p = 0,252; r = 0,342) showed no significant relationship. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that certain individual factors—namely gender, education, and work experience—affect nurses’ response speed in the emergency department. This study provides practical implications for hospital management in developing strategies to improve service quality and contributes to the literature regarding factors influencing nurses’ response time.
