Abstract

The digital transformation in the healthcare sector has shifted service systems toward information technology-based platforms, including the implementation of Electronic Medical Records (EMR). While EMR improves efficiency and patient data accuracy, its implementation introduces new challenges for healthcare professionals in the form of technostress, stress arising from the need to adapt to technology. For nurses, the use of complex information systems and digital work demands can increase the risk of burnout, characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. This study aims to analyze the influence of three main dimensions of technostress : techno-overload, techno-complexity, and techno-uncertainty on burnout among nurses at RSO Soeharso Surakarta, as well as to assess the role of EMR usability as a moderating variable. The approach is based on the Job Demand-Resources (JD-R) model theory, where technostress is positioned as a Job Demand that can increase burnout, while EMR usability serves as a Job Resource that has the potential to mitigate these negative effects. This is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional design. The population consists of all nurses at RSO Soeharso Surakarta who use EMR. Sampling was conducted using a stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected using standardized questionnaires : the Technostress Creators Scale (Tarafdar et al., 2007), the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI), and the System Usability Scale (SUS). Data analysis was performed using Partial Least Square–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to test direct relationships and moderating (interaction) effects. The results show that techno-overload, techno-complexity, and techno-uncertainty have a positive and significant effect on nurse burnout. There is a significant negative moderating effect of EMR usability on the influence of technostress toward nurse burnout during EMR implementation at RSO Soeharso Surakarta. The structural model's R Square (R2) meets the "moderate" criteria, indicating that 63.4% of the variation in nurse burnout can be explained by the model, while the remaining 36.6% is explained by other variables. The SEM-Predict value of 0.548 indicates that the model predicts nurse burnout levels effectively. Research findings suggest that EMR usability acts as a buffer or protection against technostress, ultimately reducing nurse burnout at RSO Soeharso Surakarta.
