Abstract

This study uses Algirdas Julien Greimas' narrative semiotics approach to analyse and interpret the narrative structure of the video game A Space for the Unbound (ASFTU). The study maps the actantial model, actant axis and narrative scheme, focusing on analysing narrative patterns. Descriptive qualitative methods were used to collect data through participatory observation, supported by documentation. A literature study supported by a logbook was conducted to ensure reliability. A cool media lens and a constructivist paradigm were employed. The results of the study show that ASFTU's narrative pattern involves high player interactivity in order to achieve a deep understanding. The most highly valued goal is self-acceptance, and the greatest challenge is confronting and overcoming one's own limitations. The ASFTU narrative pattern uses the game system as the main driver of the narrative, incorporating resources that represent valuable memories. The final result is emotional resolution. ASFTU conveys the idea that self-healing stems from accepting reality and emotional connections.
