Abstract

Rapid population growth and urbanization in Indonesia, particularly in urban areas, have led to serious challenges in providing adequate housing for low-income communities. The Semanggi area in Surakarta City is one of the most densely populated districts and contains the largest concentration of slum settlements, thus requiring efficient, affordable, and sustainable housing solutions. This study aims to design social housing in the Semanggi area using a generative design approach to optimize the use of limited land while improving housing quality and the surrounding environment. The design methodology includes a literature review, site and socio-economic data collection and analysis, followed by generative design experiments based on parametric modeling. The main parameters considered include site and environmental conditions, housing capacity, solar orientation, prevailing wind direction, and building mass optimization. The results demonstrate that the generative design approach is capable of producing adaptive massing alternatives that respond to environmental conditions and residents’ needs, while also supporting land-use efficiency through vertical housing. This social housing design is expected to contribute to slum upgrading in the Semanggi area and serve as a model for responsive, inclusive, and sustainable social housing development in dense urban contexts.
