Abstract
This research was motivated by the low speaking ability of Indonesian junior high school students in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context, which is often influenced by affective factors such as self-confidence. The study aimed to investigate the relationship between self-confidence and speaking proficiency among junior high school students in Colomadu District and to determine the extent to which self-confidence can predict students’ English-speaking performance. This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational-predictive design. The participants consisted of public and private junior high school students selected through multi-stage sampling. Data were collected using a self-confidence questionnaire and a speaking test, and analyzed through Spearman’s Rho correlation and non-linear regression using SPSS version 24, as the normality test indicated non-normal data distribution. The findings revealed that there was no significant relationship between self-confidence and speaking proficiency (p > 0.05). The non-linear regression analysis also showed that self-confidence was not a significant predictor of students’ speaking ability. These results suggest that speaking proficiency is more strongly influenced by other factors such as linguistic mastery, anxiety, and opportunities for practice. In conclusion, the study highlights that while self-confidence plays an important role in language learning, it is not the main determinant of students’ speaking performance in the EFL context. The results support Krashen’s Affective Filter Hypothesis (1984) and Bandura’s Self-Efficacy Theory (1997), emphasizing that confidence functions contextually within a broader affective system influencing language performance.
