Abstract
Cardiorespiratory fitness is an important indicator of adolescent health that can be assessed through VO2max. One factor related to VO2max is Body Mass Index (BMI). Changes in physical activity patterns and body composition in adolescents can cause an imbalance between cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max) and Body Mass Index. This study aims to determine the relationship between VO2max and Body Mass Index (BMI) in adolescents. This study used an observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The study respondents were adolescents selected using purposive sampling. BMI was measured by weighing and height measurement, while VO2max was measured using the Cooper 12-minute run test. Physical activity was assessed using the Godin Leisure Time Physical Activity Questionnaire (GLTPAQ). The Spearman Rank correlation test results showed that there was no significant relationship between VO₂max and BMI in adolescents (r = 0.107; p = 0.35). The analysis results showed the VO₂max and BMI values in adolescents. The statistical tests performed did not show a significant relationship between VO₂max and BMI in adolescents. These results indicate that BMI cannot directly describe the level of cardiorespiratory fitness in adolescents, especially in junior high school students.
