Abstract
Background: Adolescence is a transitional phase characterized by various physical, cognitive, emotional, and social changes. These changes often create pressures that can potentially lead to stress. Personal factors such as age and gender are known to influence stress levels, but previous research has not shown clear consistency. Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between personal characteristics and stress levels in adolescents during their growth and development. Method: This study used a quantitative design with a descriptive correlative approach. The study was conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Kartasura from May to July 2025, involving 62 ninth-grade adolescents as respondents. Respondents were selected using a random sampling technique convenience samplingwith the criteria of being between 11 and 21 years old, having no history of significant mental health disorders, currently attending formal education, and willing to participate after signing an informed consent. The instruments used consisted of a demographic questionnaire covering age and gender as well as a questionnaireDepression Anxiety Stress Scale(DASS-42) on the stress subscale. To measure stress levels in adolescents, this study used the DASS-42 instrument on the stress subscale, which has undergone validity and reliability testing. The test results indicated a validity value for the stress subvariable of r = 0.791. Furthermore, the reliability test of the same DASS-42 instrument showed a Cronbach's alpha value of 0.981. Data analysis in this study was conducted using theChi-Squarewith a significance level of 0.05. Results: The study results indicated that the majority of respondents were aged 15-16 (59.7%) and female (53.2%). The highest stress level was moderate (40.3%), followed by no stress (38.7%), and mild stress (21.3%). The analysis showed a significant relationship between age and stress levels (p=0.011) and gender and stress levels (p=0.004). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that there is a relationship between personal characteristics and stress levels in adolescents during their growth and development.
