Abstract
Background: Adolescence is a dynamic transitional phase, characterized by biological, psychological, and social changes that can trigger stress. Inability to adapt to these changes can lead to identity crises and maladaptive behavior, including self-harm. Exploring adolescents' experiences related to adjustment during stress is important, because the findings can be used as a basis for nursing therapy. Objective: This study aims to describe adolescents' experiences in adapting to daily life related to stress management. Method: This study uses a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method. Participants consisted of 10 9th grade students at a junior high school selected through purposive sampling technique based on the results of the DASS-42 questionnaire. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Braun and Clarke Thematic Analysis. Results: This study found five main themes with eleven subthemes, namely students' academic pressure, students' family conflict, students' negative feelings, students' adaptive coping, and students' maladaptive coping. Conclusion: Adolescents' experiences in managing stress is a process influenced by the interaction of various internal and external factors. The strategies implemented include adaptive and maladaptive coping, emphasizing the importance of environmental support and learning emotional management skills for adolescents. Recommendation: Active involvement of families, schools, and health professionals is needed to build a supportive environment, provide education on stress management, and facilitate the implementation of adaptive coping strategies to improve adolescents' ability to deal with emotional distress.
