Abstract
Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world, with a population of 265 million, comprising 113.17 million males and 131.88 million females, resulting in a population density of 134 people per square kilometer. This population increase will automatically influence the increase in settlements in Indonesia. Assessment of terrain suitability is based on the characteristics of the terrain itself. Physical characteristics such as geology, soil type, and hydrology are used as benchmarks for determining the suitability of the terrain. The impacts of unsuitable land characteristics for its intended use will eventually damage the land and lead to various problems, such as natural disasters. The objectives of this study are: 1. To analyze terrain suitability classes for residential locations in Tawangmangu District, Karanganyar Regency. 2. To analyze the distribution of terrain suitability classes for residential locations in Tawangmangu District, Karanganyar Regency. The method used in this study was a survey. The results of the 2019 terrain suitability study for residential locations in Tawangmangu District, Karanganyar Regency, showed that the area has two terrain suitability classes for residential locations, based on Suprapto Dibyosaputro's definition: class II (Suitable for terrain conditions) and class III (Sufficiently suitable for terrain). Keywords: Terrain suitability, settlements, Tawangmangu District
