Abstract

Traditional markets have a strategic role in the economic and social life of Indonesian society, but many of them have experienced a decline in function due to design irrelevance to modern needs and lack of attention to universal accessibility. This research aims to redesign Palur Market in Karanganyar Regency using neo-vernacular architecture and universal design approaches to create a public space that is functional, inclusive, and retains local identity. The results of this research show that the incorporation of local architectural elements such as roof forms, ornaments, and traditional spatial layout with universal design principles-such as accessibility for people with disabilities, the elderly, pregnant women, and children-can improve the attractiveness, comfort, and social function of the market. This design is expected to serve as a pilot model for other traditional market redesigns in Indonesia, while strengthening the local economy through cultural integration and inclusivity.
