Abstract

This study aims to explore how father involvement in parenting contributes to the development of independence in early childhood. The research is grounded in the issue of low paternal involvement in Indonesia and the essential role fathers play in children’s social-emotional development and independence. This study employed a qualitative method with a narrative descriptive approach. Informants were selected using purposive sampling, consisting of five fathers as the main participants—each having children aged 4–6 years and working fixed hours—and five mothers as supporting informants. Data were collected through open-ended questionnaires distributed online via Google Forms, as well as an independence observation sheet filled out by the mothers. The instruments were developed based on the three aspects of father involvement proposed by Lamb—engagement, accessibility, and responsibility—and indicators of early childhood independence, including self-care ability, decision-making, responsibility, self-regulation, and self-confidence. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis, and data validity was ensured through source triangulation between fathers, mothers, and observation results. The findings indicate that fathers are directly involved in children’s daily activities, strive to be physically and emotionally present despite time limitations, and carry out parenting responsibilities through routine tasks and consistent rules. Father involvement across the aspects of engagement, accessibility, and responsibility positively contributes to children’s independence, as reflected in their ability to fulfill personal needs, follow rules, and confidently complete tasks independently. These findings highlight the crucial role of fathers as a foundation for fostering independence in early childhood and are expected to serve as practical guidance for parents and further developmental psychology research on paternal roles.
