Abstract

Social interaction among adolescents is important as a means to build identity, emotional well-being, and adaptive abilities. The development of information technology, accompanied by the rapid growth of social media, has led to increased intensity of social media use and has impacted direct social interaction, especially among adolescents. This study aims to examine the relationship between the intensity of social media use and social interaction, and to test differences in social interaction based on gender. This research uses a quantitative correlational approach. The sampling technique used is accidental sampling. The sample size is 102 adolescents at SMA N 1 Kajen, aged 10-22 years. The research instruments used are the Social Interaction Scale and the Social Media Use Intensity Scale. Data analysis used covariance analysis techniques. The results show a significant positive relationship between the intensity of social media use and the social interaction variable (F = 7.406; 0.008 < 0.05). Gender does not have a significant difference in adolescent social interaction (F = 0.909; p = 0.343 > 0.05). The effective contribution (R Square) of the Social Media Use Intensity variable is 6.76% and the Gender variable is 0.63%, with a total contribution of 7.39%. The remaining 92.61% comes from the influence of other variables not studied. The implication of this research shows that the intensity of social media use requires a balanced approach to social interaction, in order to improve the quality of healthy social interaction.
