Abstract

This final project, entitled “Hospice with a Biomimicry Architectural Approach,” examines the design of palliative hospice health facilities that are oriented toward meeting the physiological, psychological, and spiritual needs of patients with terminal conditions. This research is motivated by the limited development of hospice services and palliative care in Indonesia, which can improve the quality of life and the quality of death and dying. Based on the 2015 End-of-Life (EOL) quality indicators and a review of Islamic values regarding death, this project emphasizes the importance of providing holistic, dignified, and humane care. The biomimicry architectural approach is used as a design strategy to produce innovative solutions to the complex problems of terminal patient care. Using the weaver bird as a biological model—as inspiration for the system and form—this study formulates a design concept that supports personal comfort, spatial flexibility, and emotional tranquility for patients and families. The selected site in Surakarta City was comprehensively analyzed based on the involvement of an oncology cancer health facility located 240 meters from the selected site, in order to support the integration of health facilities in the hospice. The design framework includes spatial needs analysis, zoning strategies, structural concept formulation, and the application of architectural principles oriented towards improving the quality of death. The design solutions developed include the provision of communal areas as a means of social interaction, private spaces that provide a sense of security and comfort, and the use of environmental elements such as natural lighting, vegetation, and bioclimatic strategies. Islamic values are also integrated as a basis for creating spaces that support reflection, tranquility, and spiritual readiness at the end of life. In conclusion, this study has produced a hospice design concept that is responsive to the environment and users, supports emotional well-being, and is based on spiritual values to create an empathetic and humane end-of-life care environment.)
