Abstract

Film, as a visual communication medium, plays a role in representing personal and social values. This study analyzes the film The Adam Project 2022 to examine the representation of interpersonal conflict and self development wrapped in a science fiction work rich in symbols. The film tells the story of Adam Reed's journey through time, where he meets his younger self, creating a unique dynamic in facing personal conflict and the process of self development. The purpose of this study is to identify the categories of symbols found in the variables of self-development and interpersonal conflict and to identify the meaning and process of symbolic interpretation in The Adam Project, specifically how these symbols represent the self development and interpersonal conflict of the characters through Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. Barthes' approach interprets meaning: denotative, connotative, and mythological. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with descriptive and documentary analysis techniques, as well as a critical paradigm approach to identify symbols in films that represent conflict and the development of the main characters. The results show that there are a total of 3 scenes that represent the variable of self development and 3 scenes that represent the variable of interpersonal conflict. The Self Development variable is divided into three main categories, named Self Awareness and Self Regulation, Potential and Productivity Development, and Spiritual and Existential Growth. Meanwhile, Interpersonal Conflict consists of three categories, named Misunderstandings in Interpersonal Communication, Competition in Obtaining Limited Resources, and Differences in Values and Fundamental Beliefs Between the Parties Involved. The conclusion of this study confirms that The Adam Project not only presents time travel as a science fiction narrative, but also offers symbols that depict self development and personal conflict resolution. These representations illustrate how the main character faces past trauma, reconciles with himself, and builds healthier interpersonal relationships.
