Abstract
This research aims to (1) Describe sentence structure in expository texts written by 8th-grade students at MTs Negeri 13 Boyolali, (2) Present sentence variations in expository texts written by 8th-grade students at MTs Negeri 13 Boyolali, and (3) Describe the utilization of sentence structure and variations in student-written expository texts as teaching materials for 8th-grade Indonesian language. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a literature study design. The research objects are sentence structure and variations in 22 expository texts written by 8th-grade students at MTs Negeri 13 Boyolali. The data collection technique uses the observation and note-taking technique. The data validation technique uses theory triangulation. The data analysis technique uses the distribution method with the direct element sharing technique (BUL). The research results show that (1) the sentence structure in students' expository texts consists of 13 basic patterns with a total of 77 sentences, including 18 sentences with the S-P-O pattern, 10 sentences with the S-P pattern, 9 sentences with the S-P-O pattern, 10 sentences with the S-P-O-K pattern, 8 sentences with the S-P-K pattern, and other patterns with lower frequencies; (2) sentence variations include order variations with 67 ordinary sequential sentences and 4 inversions, active-passive variations with 58 active sentences and 13 passive sentences, news-command-question variations with 64 news sentences, 11 command sentences, and 2 question sentences, as well as long-short variations with 49 long sentences and 28 short sentences; (3) This research can be used as teaching material for Indonesian language class VIII in learning expository texts, particularly for understanding sentence structure and variations in expository writing.
