Abstract

This study undertakes a comprehensive examination of the moral insights presented in Peter Farrelly’s film ‘Green Book’. Through a thorough analysis of the film’s storyline, character dynamics, and thematic elements, this research explores the influence of ‘Green Book’ on shaping audience perceptions regarding empathy, compassion, and resilience. By drawing upon theories of character education and the impact of media, this study aims to illuminate the effectiveness of cinematic storytelling as a means to foster ethical and social development among viewers. The theory used in this research is the Semiotic theory by Roland Barthes in his book “Mythologies” (1957). According to this theory, moral values can be interpreted using character analysis and sign or symbol within the movie. This study used a qualitative research method with analysis and research content. The writer collected data by watching the movie, then determined the Denotation, Connotation, and Myth contained in the film. Data analysis from this study shows that there are many life lessons that can be taken from a film to become a better person and the importance of empathy towards others that can be taken from the film ‘Green Book’.
