Abstract
This research seeks to explore the meaning of social criticism expressed in the lyrics of "Killing in the Name" by the band Rage Against the Machine by applying Ferdinand de Saussure semiotic theory. The song is widely recognized as a protest against social injustice, racism, and abuse of power by law enforcement authorities, particularly in the United States. Using a qualitative interpretive method, data were obtained by analyzing documents related to the song lyrics and supporting references. The findings show that the lyrics are rich in symbols and hidden meanings representing social realities, especially criticism of the infiltration of racist ideology within state institutions. The analysis of signifiers and signifieds in each stanza reveals an implicit call to society to recognize and resist systemic injustice. This song serves as a powerful medium of communication, effectively delivering messages of social critique and fostering collective awareness against oppression legitimized by authority. This study seeks to deepen the comperhension of music as a tool for social communication and criticism.
