Abstract

SMPIT Insan Mulia Manokwari in West Papua has recently been supported by a native English speaker from the United States of America, who has been teaching the students for almost three months. This study compares the teaching strategies employed by native and non-native English Speakers in ninth-grade classes at SMPIT Insan Mulia Manokwari, West Papua. The research aims to identify and analyze the teaching strategies used by both types of teachers, explore the factors influencing their strategy choices, examine the challenges they face in the classroom, and understand students’ perceptions of the methods applied. A qualitative descriptive approach was used, with data collected through classroom observations, interviews with teachers and students, and questionnaires. Findings reveal that a native English speaker tends to adopt communicative and interactive strategies, such as role plays, songs, and Total Physical Response (TPR), to increase student engagement. In contrast, a non-native English speaker more frequently utilizes structured methods like discovery learning, problem-based learning, and task-based instruction to help students understand the material. Students appreciate the fluency, pronunciation, and creativity of a native English speaker, while also valuing the clarity, cultural understanding, and contextual relevance provided by a non-native English speaker. The study concludes that both native and non-native English speakers bring complementary strengths to English language teaching. Their combined approaches can significantly enhance the effectiveness of English instruction, especially in diverse educational settings like SMPIT Insan Mulia Manokwari. The results are expected to contribute to the development of more adaptive and culturally responsive teaching strategies in similar educational environments.
