Abstract
Anthropogenic activities and pollution in the coastal area of Tahura Ngurah Rai, Bali, have altered the mangrove ecosystem, which plays a vital role in maintaining coastal water quality. These changes are reflected in mangrove vegetation density, indicating ecosystem health and the roots’ ability to filter sediments, represented by Total Suspended Solid (TSS) levels. This study analyzes spatial and temporal changes in mangrove density and TSS using Sentinel-2A imagery from 2016, 2020, and 2024, and examines their ecological relationship. Methods include the Mangrove Vegetation Index (MVI) to estimate vegetation density and the Case-2 Regional Coast Colour (C2RCC) algorithm to calculate TSS, followed by Pearson correlation and simple linear regression on 75 paired sampling points. Results show mangrove density remained relatively stable during 2016–2024, while TSS fluctuated but stayed below the water quality threshold set by Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021. Variations were influenced by the composition of primary and secondary mangroves determining ecological resilience. The relationship between mangrove density and TSS was weak and statistically insignificant, as TSS was mainly affected by external factors such as anthropogenic activities and hydro-oceanographic conditions.
