Abstract

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder are characterized by positive and negative symptoms. Schizophrenia patients often lack optimal support from their families. The purpose of this study is to provide promotive and preventive measures for family-based schizophrenia care by exploring the family's experiences of the role of support and understanding of caring for schizophrenia patients. The six participants were selected through purposive sampling. Data collection methods used were semi-structured interviews, observation, and supporting document notes. Data were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The analysis results indicate that parental support for patients with schizophrenia symptoms is quite good, with three major themes identified: the role of mothers and fathers in support, the emotional dynamics of parents, and the meaning of parental support in supporting schizophrenia patients. There are similarities in the experiences of participants, such as patient care behavior, treatment behavior, and understanding of schizophrenia. The findings in this study demonstrate the importance of parental understanding in caring for and treating schizophrenia patients to prevent relapse of symptoms.
