Abstract

The film Budi Pekerti by Wregas Bhanuteja (2023) addresses the issue of misinformation, leading to cyberbullying on social media. This study aims to analyze how audiences understand and interpret the phenomenon of hoaxes, specifically disinformation and misinformation, as depicted in the film. The research method used was qualitative, using Stuart Hall's coding-decoding reception analysis approach. This approach focuses on how audiences interpret messages in the media and the reception positions they adopt. The results show that audiences occupy two dominant reception positions: the dominant-hegemonic position and the negotiating position. In the dominant-hegemonic position, audiences fully accept the message presented in the film without objection, while in the negotiating position, audiences still accept the film's message but with a critical perspective based on their personal background and experiences. Audience reception of the hoax phenomenon, including the conceptual distinction between disinformation and misinformation, was generally positive. They not only understood the theory but also demonstrated a cautious awareness of the flow of digital information in everyday life. The film Budi Pekerti is seen as a medium that conveys a message about the dangers of hoaxes in a clear and easy-to-understand manner. This film is also considered capable of raising awareness of the importance of digital literacy, responsibility in verifying information, and an attitude of not hastily judging others. This research confirms that audience backgrounds, including education, experience, environmental background, and culture, can play a significant role in shaping their perspectives and interpretations of a phenomenon, one example being hoaxes in digital culture.
