Abstract
This study aims to explore the feelings of elderly widows who no longer live with their families, as well as the coping strategies they use to reduce the loneliness they feel. This study employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to investigate the feelings of loneliness and the coping strategies employed by informants. Informants in the study were selected using a purposive sampling technique with determining criteria including someone aged 60 years or older, widowed, and no longer living with their family. Three informants were obtained who met the required criteria. The research data were obtained through semistructured interviews. The collected data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman's method, which involved data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that elderly people experience loneliness, caused by the death of a spouse and living apart from their children. The loneliness experienced gives rise to feelings of sadness and disappointment. Various coping strategies are carried out by participating in social and spiritual activities. By participating in these activities, feelings of joy arise, and the loneliness experienced is reduced.
