Abstract

The term tolerance is often associated with religious harmony, with the main goal of creating peace and creating a harmonious atmosphere amidst diversity. Studies on QS. Al-Baqarah: 256 and QS. Al-Kafirun have been widely conducted, but generally discussed separately without examining the relationship between the principle of religious freedom and the affirmation of faith identity. Furthermore, there is not much research that links Buya Hamka's interpretation in the context of Al-Azhar's interpretation with the context of interfaith relations in Indonesia. This study aims to explain the concept of interfaith tolerance based on Buya Hamka's interpretation of QS. Al-Baqarah: 256 and Al-Kafirun. This study uses library research and qualitative methods. The primary source comes from al-Azhar's interpretation, while the secondary sources come from books and journals discussing interfaith tolerance. In QS. Al-Baqarah: 256 states that there is no compulsion in religion, while in QS. Al-Kafirun discusses faith and the prohibition of mixing religions. The results of the study indicate that QS. Al-Baqarah: 256 is an affirmation that Islam does not force religion on anyone and this verse can be an answer to the accusation that Islam was spread by the sword, this is what triggers differences in interpretation. Similarly, QS. Al-Kafirun, is widely understood as a firm statement about differences in beliefs and teaches the principle of tolerance by rejecting the mixing of beliefs. It also emphasizes differences in faith as a form of respect for the beliefs of others. Overall, this study opens up the idea of the importance of peaceful coexistence, maintaining the purity of faith and continuing to uphold religious tolerance.
