Abstract

From tanning to handicrafts, Magetan is famous for its leather industry. Magetan's regional revenue by industry type in the leather industry sector is dominated by leather tanning (upstream). However, revenue based on the value of artisan production (downstream) is significantly lower compared to the production value of leather tanners (upstream). The problem found is the difficulty for artisans in finding new artisans with sufficient skills. The lack of supporting facilities that can enhance the quality development of artisans in Magetan city served as a reference for the planning of this building. The facilities included within this building are a workshop, gallery, learning & research zone, and several supporting facilities for visitor attractions. A biophilic architectural approach was taken to enhance focus and comfort for building users, including both craftsmen and visitors. Biophilic design can be organized into three categories – Nature in Space, Natural Analogs, and Nature of the Space – which provide a framework for understanding and enabling the integration of diverse strategies into the built environment. Nature in Space has the most influential role on the health, comfort, and productivity of building users.
