Abstract

Background: High blood pressure is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease that can be prevented through lifestyle interventions, one of which is physical activity. However, the effectiveness of certain types of physical exercise on blood pressure reduction is still unclear. Objective: This study aims to analyze the differences in the effects of upper and lower extremity exercises on changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Methods: The study used a pre-experimental design with a pre-test post-test approach on two groups. The sample of 32 male participants were randomly assigned to either the upper extremity exercise group (weightlifting) or the lower extremity exercise group (leg extension), each performing 3 sets of 12 repetitions with a 3 kg weight. Blood pressure was measured before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, unpaired t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, and Wilcoxon Signed- Rank test. Results: The lower extremity group showed a significant decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure (p < 0.001), while the upper extremity group experienced an increase in blood pressure, particularly in systolic pressure (p < 0.001). There was a significant difference between the two groups in terms of blood pressure changes. Conclusion: Lower extremity exercise is more effective in lowering blood pressure than upper extremity exercise. These findings can serve as a basis for recommending physical exercise as a preventive measure against hypertension.
