Abstract

Psychological well-being is a crucial aspect of student development, especially amid the widespread influence of popular culture such as Korean culture. Korean culture promotes beauty standards that are often internalized by its admirers. This study aims to explore how university students who are fans of Korean culture construct the meaning of their psychological well-being when confronted with these beauty standards. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with thematic analysis techniques. Participants were selected through purposive sampling and consisted of four active female university students aged 18–24 years. All participants were active enthusiasts of Korean culture, as indicated by their consumption of K-Beauty products, purchase of Korean merchandise, engagement with public figures from South Korea, and participation in fan communities, particularly those centered around K-Pop idols. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and open-ended questionnaires. The findings reveal that the participants' psychological well-being developed dynamically. Some demonstrated adaptive capabilities in the areas of autonomy, purpose in life, and personal growth, while others encountered challenges in self-acceptance due to the pressure to conform to Korean beauty standards. These results suggest that the psychological well-being of Korean culture enthusiasts is not static but evolves through reflective processes and personal meaning-making. The study highlights the importance of strengthening self-acceptance as a key effort to maintain psychological well-being in the face of popular cultural influences.
