Abstract

Poverty is a complex issue influenced by various multidimensional factors, one of which is gender inequality. In Indonesia, gender inequality remains a critical issue in the country’s development. The gap between men and women in access to education, decent employment, income, and decision-making remains significant, and this directly affects women’s contribution to the economy. This study aims to estimate the effect of the Gender Development Index (GDI), the Gender Empowerment Index (GEI), the percentage of women working as professionals, and the ratio of female workers to total workers on the poverty rate across all provinces in Indonesia from 2015 to 2021, using panel data regression with a Fixed Effects Model (FEM) approach. The regression results show that GDI, GEI, the percentage of women professionals, and the ratio of female workers to total workers each have a negative effect on the poverty rate. Individually, GDI, GEI, the percentage of women professionals, and the ratio of female workers to total workers all demonstrate a negative influence on poverty. To effectively reduce poverty, the Indonesian government must continue to strengthen affirmative policies that promote gender equality across various sectors, particularly in the economic and labor sectors. Moreover, the increase in women’s participation as professionals should be supported by eliminating gender-based discrimination in the workplace. Therefore, by creating a conducive and inclusive environment for women to contribute optimally to development, it is expected that societal welfare will improve and poverty levels will continue to decline in a sustainable manner.
