Abstract
In early 2022, the world was shocked when Russia started a war against Ukraine. This war, which caused many casualties, weakened Ukraine's defense system and prompted the Ukrainian president to seek assistance from other countries, including Israel. However, Israel did not provide assistance in terms of weaponry, which the Ukrainian president considered to be of utmost importance. As a result of this dispute, many social media users expressed their criticism through Facebook accounts reporting on the situation. The purpose of this study is to identify the types of criticism strategies and politeness strategies used by social media users in response to news about the Ukrainian president's request for assistance from Israel, which refused to provide military aid. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The researcher used Nguyen's theory (2005) to identify the types of criticism strategies and Brown and Levinson's theory (1987) to identify the types of politeness strategies. The researcher found 46 data points. The results of the study show that social media users prefer to use the asking/presupposing strategy, the demand for change strategy, and the identification of problem strategy in criticism strategies. Additionally, in politeness strategies, social media users prefer to use the bald on record and off record strategies when criticizing news about the Ukrainian president's request to the Israeli government, which refuses to assist with the weapons system.
