Abstract

The increasing elderly population in Indonesia demands special attention to the provision of facilities that can support their physical, psychological, and social well-being. Surakarta, as one of the cities with a high percentage of elderly residents, requires a place that not only functions as a care facility but also as a human-centered space for learning and interaction. Based on this issue, this final project proposes the design of a Learning and Rehabilitation Center for Elderly with an Emphatic Architecture approach as a strategy to create inclusive, adaptive, and emotionally responsive spaces for the elderly. The objective of this design is to provide facilities that address the needs of the elderly holistically by integrating educational and rehabilitative functions while ensuring emotional comfort through spatial designs that respond to user needs. The methods used include literature review, precedent study, field observation, as well as demographic and spatial data analysis. The Emphatic Architecture concept is applied through design principles that are responsive, inclusive, and integrated with nature, aiming to encourage productivity, independence, and quality of life for the elderly. The result of this design is a proposed elderly learning and rehabilitation center in Surakarta that emphasizes the importance of social connectivity, safety, comfort, and spatial sustainability. With an adaptive and elderly-friendly design, the facility is expected to serve as a prototype for public spaces that consider the psychosocial and spiritual aspects of the elderly while also supporting caregivers in fulfilling their roles optimally.
