Abstract
Self-control is the ability to restrain impulses, emotions, and undesirable behaviors in order to avoid making impulsive purchases. When a person is under stress and lacks sufficient self-control, it can affect their decision-making and even influence how others perceive their actions, potentially resulting in harm to themselves and others. This study aims to examine the relationship between self-control and stress on impulsive buying behavior among psychology students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta. The population in this study consists of Psychology students from UMS, class of 2021–2024, who actively use online shopping applications. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling, with a total of 120 respondents. This study employs a quantitative method with data collected using a Likert scale. The results show a significant influence of self-control on impulsive buying behavior (p = 0.000 < 0.05), as well as a significant influence of stress on impulsive buying (p = 0.000 < 0.05). Furthermore, both independent variables have a significant partial effect on impulsive buying behavior (p = 0.000 < 0.05). Therefore, the lower a student’s level of self-control, the higher the tendency to engage in impulsive buying. Likewise, the higher the level of stress, the greater the likelihood of impulsive buying behavior.
