Abstract

Introduction: Nutritional issues among young adults, including students, have become a significant concern as they relate to the phase of lifestyle and dietary habits formation. Students are vulnerable to nutritional imbalances due to factors such as sedentary lifestyles, academic stress, fast food consumption, and a lack of nutritional awareness. Gender plays a role in shaping nutritional status through hormonal influences, metabolism, and differing eating habits. Additionally, students' living arrangements significantly affect their daily consumption patterns; those living at home tend to have more regular eating habits compared to those living in dormitories. Objective: This study aimed to determine the correlation between gender and living arrangements with the nutritional status of non-health students at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. Methodology: A cross-sectional study involving 95 respondents selected through consecutive sampling. Characteristic data were obtained through interviews and questionnaire completion. Anthropometric measurement data were collected through questionnaire responses and measuring height and weight. Subsequently, nutritional status was determined by calculating the Body Mass Index (BMI). Results: Normal nutritional status was identified in 57.9% of respondents. The majority of participants were female, accounting for 79%, and most of them lived in dormitories, totalling 64.2%. There was a significant correlation between gender (p=0.016) and living arrangements (p=0.009) with nutritional status. Conclusion: Students engaged in light physical activities, such as jogging or cleaning their dorms, for 30 minutes. Moreover, the adoption of healthy eating patterns, which includes regular breakfast habits, adequate fiber intake, drinking plenty of water, and increasing the consumption of vegetables and fruit, is highly recommended.
