Abstract

This study aims to explore subjective well-being, especially in student cosplayers, considering that cosplay is considered an escape from the real world, but on the other hand, it also has the potential for positive impacts on individual psychological well-being. Participants consisted of four student cosplayers aged 18-25 years, female, and active students. The sampling technique used a non-probability purposive sampling technique. This study used a qualitative phenomenological approach. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. Data analysis used Descriptive Phenomenological Analysis with the Stevick-Molaizzi-Keen data analysis model from Moustakas (1994). The results showed that subjective well-being in student cosplayers varied among participants, the form of satisfaction was in the form of meeting friends so they get social support, making cosplay their coping strategy, cosplay as a means of freedom for someone and cosplay as a place for self-development. The implication of this research is that students use cosplay to seek social support, coping strategies, and develop self-abilities.
