Abstract

This research aims to identify the role of leadership in building collective harmony within the Reog Ponorogo art troupe through the lens of the ngemong raos concept. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed, involving four participants comprising a main coach, dancers, and a musician, who were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and participant observation and subsequently analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that leadership is not singular but dynamic and fluid, adapting to the context between two primary figures: the Main Coach and the Slompret (flute) player. The Main Coach's role is dominant during the pre-performance stage, focusing on choreography, fostering group chemistry, and resolving conflicts. Conversely, the Slompret player assumes a central role during the performance, guiding the music and tempo. It is concluded that the application of the ngemong raos concept in Reog Ponorogo's leadership significantly contributes to achieving collective harmony through a flexible and contextual distribution of roles.
