Abstract

The Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) is one of the main tourist destinations in Indonesia with rich cultural, historical, and natural attractions, making it a favorite destination for domestic and foreign tourists. The growth of the tourism sector is driving an increase in the need for accommodation facilities, especially hotels. However, many hotels still neglect the sustainability and energy efficiency aspects, which have an impact on high energy consumption and sub-optimal thermal comfort. In addition, massive urbanization has also worsened the Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon in Yogyakarta. This design aims to present an environmentally friendly hotel that is energy efficient and thermally comfortable. The main problem is how to design a hotel building that is able to reduce energy load without sacrificing user comfort. The design approach through Window to Wall Ratio (WWR) and Overall Thermal Transfer Value (OTTV) is used as a strategy in heat control and energy efficiency. The environmentally friendly concept is also applied as a preservation effort, one of which is through the use of shade vegetation, the use of well-insulated local materials, and building orientation design that is adaptive to the tropical climate. The design process includes location studies, climate analysis, concept formulation, mass processing, material determination, and evaluation of WWR and OTTV values in accordance with standards. The design results resulted in a control of the value of WWR <40% and OTTV <35 W/m² which was able to significantly reduce the cooling load. In addition, the application of passive design also improves natural thermal comfort and supports the principles of sustainable architecture. This design is expected to be a reference in the development of hotels that are oriented towards energy efficiency and comfort for residents in the tropics.
