Abstract

The creative process is a crucial element in the art of painting, enabling artists to realize their expression and shape their artistic identity. This research aims to analyze in depth how the creative process of painters unfolds, from ideation to the creation of a work. Utilizing a narrative qualitative approach, this study involved five fine arts students from universities in Yogyakarta, selected purposively. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews to explore their personal experiences, which were then thematically analyzed. The findings identified that the creative process is structured upon three interconnected components: Expertise, Motivation, and Creative Thinking. Expertise is established as the initial foundation through self-reflection that triggers awareness of interest, the influence of family, and interactions within the social environment that foster technical skills. Motivation functions as the primary driver, encompassing both internal factors such as emotional release and the search for meaning, as well as external factors like inspiration from the works of role-model artists and the dynamics within the art community. Finally, Creative Thinking is manifested in the ability to process ideas sourced from social issues, local culture, and contemplation to produce symbolic and meaningful works. It is concluded that the creative process in painting plays a significant role as a medium of catharsis for the individual. This study confirms that creativity is not merely an innate talent but a capability that can be nurtured and developed through interaction, encouragement, and a flexible mindset in facing artistic challenges.
