Abstract

Libraries in many areas, including Surakarta City, often face issues such as limited facilities and unattractive spatial design, making them unable to meet the needs of modern society. One of the main causes of this issue is the lack of optimization in the function and design of libraries as comfortable, inspiring, and engaging public spaces for users. The application of a biophilic design approach in library spaces offers a promising solution. The presence of natural elements has been proven to improve concentration, reduce stress, and foster a sense of comfort and emotional attachment to the space. The implementation of biophilic design not only transforms libraries into places for reading, but also into recreational spaces that support informal learning and social interaction, which ultimately can sustainably increase public interest in reading. The methods used in this study include observation, literature review, and comparative study. The selected site for this research is located on Ki Hajar Dewantara Street, Jebres Subdistrict, Surakarta City. The design location was chosen in Jebres Subdistrict due to its good accessibility and its surroundings, which include various educational institutions such as schools and universities—making it an ideal location for establishing a library that can reach many potential users. This design aims to accommodate both students and the general public, especially to unite existing literacy communities in Surakarta City. By emphasizing architectural expression, the library design with a biophilic architectural approach is expected to enhance concentration and literacy in Surakarta and become an appealing attraction for visitors.
