Abstract

Singosaren Plaza Surakarta City is one of the old commercial buildings that has experienced a decline in function and performance due to the development of space needs and the behavior of modern visitors. Based on the results of the Post-Occupancy Evaluation (EPH), more than 70% stated that the building did not meet the standards of technical, functional, and spatial behavior—with findings such as a poor ventilation system, many non-standard and damaged rooms, and suboptimal circulation. A total redesign is needed to restore the building's suitability and adapt it to current shopping center standards that are oriented towards user comfort and energy efficiency. The goal of this design is to present an adaptive transformation of the building's function through an environmentally friendly and contextual architectural approach to the tropical climate. The main concept promoted is natural ventilation as a method to improve air quality and thermal comfort passively. The design strategy includes rearranging the retail layout, implementing cross-ventilation through facade openings, utilizing voids and atriums as vertical ventilation paths, and integrating vegetation and open space elements to assist natural cooling. In addition, public and private zoning are also reorganized to create a healthier and more comfortable shopping experience. The design results show significant improvements in terms of thermal performance, energy efficiency, and space quality. In conclusion, the redesign of Singosaren Plaza with a natural ventilation approach has the potential to become a model for revitalizing old commercial buildings that is more sustainable, adaptive, and in line with the needs of modern cities.
