Abstract

Pest attacks such as birds and insects are major challenges in chili (Capsicum annuum) cultivation, especially during the flowering and fruiting phases when plants are most vulnerable. These pests can damage the fruit by pecking or eating plant parts, which has an impact on decreasing yields and product quality. The use of chemical pesticides as the main solution in pest control often has negative impacts on the environment and human health. Therefore, this study aims to design and develop an automatic pest repellent system based on the Internet of Things (IoT) and solar energy that is environmentally friendly and energy efficient, specifically for protecting chili plants. This system uses an ESP32 microcontroller integrated with a PIR (Passive Infrared) sensor and a DHT22 temperature sensor to detect the presence of pests based on movement and environmental conditions. When pests are detected, the system automatically activates the DFPlayer Mini module to play high-frequency sounds or predator sounds through mini active speakers, including ultrasonic sound waves, which can effectively repel pests without touching the plants. The system is powered by a 20Wp solar panel and a 12V 10Ah battery stabilized using the LM2596 step-down module, allowing the system to operate independently without a mains power supply. Monitoring and control are carried out in real-time via the Blynk application. Test results show that the PIR sensor is able to detect pest movement up to a distance of 300cm with an optimal response below 200cm. The INA219 sensor shows a power measurement accuracy of 95.17%, while the DHT22 temperature and humidity sensors have an accuracy of over 98%. The system has proven effective in reducing pest activity in the field without damaging plants and without using chemicals. This system is expected to be an effective and environmentally friendly technological solution in controlling chili plant pests and increasing agricultural productivity sustainably.
